Note from the Assistant Managing Editor:
In the penitential Psalm 51, King David says, "I acknowledge my transgression, and my sin is ever before me." St. Augustine reflects that "He did not spare himself, and therefore was not impudent in asking to be spared."
An important read this week is Archbishop Chaput's "Thoughts on the Instrumentum Laboris". The Archbishop raises five major theological difficulties with the "working instrument" for the upcoming October Synod in Rome on the theme "Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment."
For those of us struggling to get to Mass because we don't want to, Fr. Peter John Cameron suggests, "Why not make the very dilemma part of our preparation?" See "Preparing for Mass."
Then Anthony Esolen tells the story of Nathaniel Hawthorne's daughter Rose, an American Mother Teresa. She "described their work thus: 'To take the neediest class we know — both in poverty and suffering — and put them in such a condition that if our Lord knocked at the door I should not be ashamed to show what I have done.'"
Finally, words we need to hear: "It has actually been suggested that Satan is exposing the sins of men in order to discourage the faithful. But the Prince of Lies exposes nothing. He has long been the cover-up artist. The Holy Spirit does the revealing." See Fr. Rutler's "Summer Soldiers and Sunshine Patriots." - Meaghen Hale |
