Note from the Assistant Managing Editor:
"A man on his knees is more powerful than the world." These words floored me. They are from an exclusive interview Cardinal Robert Sarah gave to Edward Pentin in which he discusses his new book The Day Is Now Far Spent, the crisis in the Church and in the world, hope, and the Amazon Synod. Cardinal Sarah continues: "A man on his knees makes Satan's pride tremble. All of you who, in the eyes of men, are without power and influence, but who know how to remain on your knees before God, do not be afraid of those who want to intimidate you."
In "Father James Martin and Catholic belief," Archbishop Charles Chaput gives a much needed explanation of what to think of Fr. James Martin. "Due to the confusion caused by his statements and activities regarding same-sex related (LGBT) issues, I find it necessary to emphasize that Father Martin does not speak with authority on behalf of the Church, and to caution the faithful about some of his claims."
Last week we read the parable of the Unjust Steward — and I was shocked by it. "Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth"? That sounds wrong. In "Holy Shrewdness," Fr. Paul Scalia explains that "The story is meant to shock, not edify. And it does so that we will sit up and appreciate a truth that contradicts worldly wisdom. Namely, the practicality of faith." - Meaghen Gonzalez |

St. Thomas Aquinas teaches us how to be happy - Catholic Exchange
For contemporary people, anticipating a bowling ball's flight trajectory comes far, far easier than conceptualizing moral or spiritual truth with the same degree of certainty. Our happiness suffers for it — but it doesn't have to.
The case for Viganò's case against the Vatican - CWR
What emerges from Marco Tossatti's pages is the image of an archbishop concerned above all else with the supernatural purpose of the Church, with the good of souls, with his standing before God, with what is due to God.
Learning to Accept God's Will in Hard Times - Catholic Exchange
While we are certainly called to carry our crosses with dignity, resignation, and even love, it's okay when we aren't able to carry on. Even Jesus was crushed under the weight of His cross — more than once.
Suffering: Mess or Masterpiece? - Pelican's Breast
Suffering is like a magnificent painting. From afar: beautiful, moving, and inspirational. Up close: a mishmash of random paint splotches, strewn about in random order — sloppy and very ugly.
The Virtue of Prudence - First Things
Moral principles and good intentions amount to little if pursued blindly. Action on behalf of the good requires accurate perception of concrete situations and circumstances.
Marriage is an uphill climb together - Catholic Stand
Once the journey begins, the climb and the trials we experience along the way can overwhelm us. We begin to think that the struggles are a distraction from the goal, when in fact the struggles themselves are a part of what it takes to shape marriage into a sacrament.
Number of abortions in US falls to lowest since 1973 - AP News
The report from the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights, counted 862,000 abortions in the U.S. in 2017. That's down from 926,000 tallied in the group's previous report for 2014, and from just over 1 million counted for 2011.
The Homeless - Practical Distributism
A "one size fits all" simple solution will not successfully address the issue because there are different reasons that people are homeless.
Attila the Hun, Leo the Great, and the Battle of Wills - Word on Fire
The profundity of the act of non-violence and humility toward a man who held weakness in no regard went far deeper than a simple battle of wills. Rather, it was the great rupturing of the constant answer to violence with violence.
