Note from the Assistant Managing Editor:

We are coming up on the First Sunday of Advent.  I've been reading about this liturgical season's various traditions (like the Advent wreath and calendar), and about reclaiming these weeks as a time of preparation and sacrifice — for example, by getting an Advent calendar without the chocolates.  (As Leila Marie Lawler says, "How much we will enjoy our chocolates when the Christmas season begins on the 25th!")

So I am pondering Advent as an opportunity to practice not just giving something up, but giving something back to God, in preparation for Him giving everything to us.

In this spirit, we are asking for donations from you this Advent — in confidence that God will return your generosity hundredfold.  Please click below to donate today.

The Deadly Dance of Perfectionism: How the Rhetoric of Family Planning Hurts Children - Public Discourse

Growing up in the culture of sociology taught me to engage in a set of behaviors to ensure that we would "always be wanted." Although the term "wantedness" was a quality originally assigned to births, the concept began to touch all aspects of children's lives, teaching us to engage in a dangerous — sometimes deadly — dance of perfectionism.
