By the time this newsletter goes out on Tuesday evening, we will be seven days away from the election here in the US. David Warren predicts riots: apparently "56 percent of Americans [are] expecting 'civil war.'" But he still has hope for "eventual tranquility [because] even under intense provocation, the side that I frankly prefer seems to hold its fire, and accept election results. Of course, there will be a few hotheads. But in the main, people who believe in law and order tend to exhibit it. Christians, traditionally, go quietly to their martyrdoms." This is a bracing reminder that the earth is not our true home, and we need not fear that which cannot kill the soul. Thomas Howard, writer, scholar, and convert to Catholicism, died on October 15th. To Peter Kreeft, he was "A Friend and Mentor" and blended "head and heart, reason and passion, mind and will, light and love, wisdom and wonder, truth and beauty." Michael Warren Davis calls Howard "The Last Victorian," a man who "wore his tweed and his tie every day, not only to look smart, but out of respect for the people he would encounter: men and women knit together in their mothers' wombs by God, in His own image and likeness." Then we have a grounded piece on "Being Prepared in These Times." When things are beyond our control we must "call upon our faith. ... Yet such faith can and should go hand in hand with astute foresight and concrete action steps, for instance right down to making lists and obtaining an appropriate store of goods and tools." We bookend the newsletter with Father George Rutler, whose words are especially pertinent for voters. "Political discourse today has degenerated into riots because what is at stake is not a mere matter of government, but a crisis of humanity itself. There is a portion of the people that, as Juvenal satirized, 'anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses,' but behind their superficial choice of living are sinister forces as from a swamp that would subvert by anarchy all that the Christian mind knows to be true."
