Note from the Assistant Editor:

"The Gift" by Michael O'Brien
We begin this week with a beautiful reflection on Our Blessed Mother, whom we need never be afraid to turn to and who always desires to help.  See "Trustworthy, United with Our Lady."

"The Stories of Hymns" is a new book by Fr. George Rutler, which tells the histories of 100 hymns, "who wrote them and in what circumstances."  His purpose is "to restore attention to some of the finest hymns" and the preface, reprinted below, is an excellent meditation on the history and purpose of the musical tradition of the Church, which is "greater even than that of any other art."

We are in the second month of the new year, a good moment to review the resolutions we made in January.  Fr.  Robert McTeigue suggests we practice gratitude and gives us three ways to do so: tactically, daily, and strategically.  See "How to exercise 'the discipline of gratitude'."

Judge Gorsuch, the Supreme Court nominiee, "is a brilliant jurist and dedicated originalist and textualist."  He is pro religious liberty and has given reasoned judgments on everything from Planned Parenthood to gun rights.  Edward Whelan walks us through his judicial record in "A Supreme Successor to Justice Scalia."

We have seen the deterioration of academic culture with safe spaces and trigger warnings — and now we see it in reactionary violence.  "More and more those opposed to the results of the presidential election make the assumption that the Republican victory handed them a licence to violate all the codes of civil society and the understandings of democratic practice."  See "The Fascists on Campus."

Finally, we have "Healing the Father Wound" from Fr. Dwight Longenecker, who says "we all carry within us something I call the Father Wound.  This is the wound we received from not having a perfect father."  What we need is the life-changing, unconditional and complete love of the Eternal Father. - Meaghen Hale
