Note from the Assistant Managing Editor:
We begin this week with a reflection from Fr. Bede Jarrett, who instructs us to thank God for our bad natures for if we had better natures we would be good for natural, rather than supernatural motives. "It is by deliberate and energetic actions alone that I can react against my own temperament."
Then we reprint "A new apologetics: Bishop Barron's Youth Synod intervention." "Innumerable surveys and studies over the past ten years have confirmed that young people frequently cite intellectual reasons when asked what has prompted them to leave the Church or lose confidence in it." His proposed solution is spot on: "The Church must be ready intelligently to give a reason for the hope that is within us."
In "A Special Message From Jean Vanier," you can watch a series of beautiful videos of Jean Vanier's message to Canada for the occasion of its 150th birthday. In the videos "his thoughts were, as always, fixed not so much on the calendar as on the eternal effort of human beings to co-exist in peace and flourish in love. He gently cautioned Canadians to mark the special anniversary of Confederation 'not just as citizens of the same country, but as brothers and sister in humanity.'"
Finally, Peter Stockland pens an excellent piece on how "tribalism now rules in race, religion, and politics ... journalists were once drawn to their craft for the joy of asking the tribe questions about its observable traits; good, bad, and indifferent." But opinion has overrun journalism. See "The Lost Art of Asking."

Conversion like Matthew's - Father Bede Jarrett, O.P. - from Classic Catholic Meditations: To Enrich Your Faith and Help You Pray
Saint Thomas, indeed, in a very brief passage, seems to suggest that the worse our natural temperament is, the better for us; nor is it at all difficult to understand his argument.
