Note from the Assistant Managing Editor:
A Catholic "lives according to principles, which is the very definition of a rational life." See this week's strong reflection, "Loving the Lawgiver."
Father John Horgan's new book "His Angels at Our Side" is "an introduction to a unique friendship, a marvelous relationship, that is available to each person: the angel guardian whom God has chosen to be your companion on the journey of eternal life is a true spiritual 'elder brother' and friend." We reprint the preface below and will reprint a longer excerpt next week. To purchase Father Horgan's new book and simultaneously donate to CERC, please go to AmazonSmile, here and select CERC. In "Christian Men, Take The Beating," Rob Marco quotes an essay on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and applies it to Catholics.
Anna Githens' essay "Of Mice and Men Without Chests" discusses the literary education of children. "Many of us submit to the idea that kids need to be prepared for the real world. Well, is it possible our notion of reality derives from a demoralized worldview? Shouldn't the real world strive for the ideal no matter how impossible it may seem?" My answer: yes.
Finally, Father George Rutler discusses the death of cultural Catholicism, comparing Christians in northern Iraq who "have had to resist attempts to make them renounce the Gospel by force" to "decadent Western cultures, where such surrender has been voluntary." See "Facts are shrewd mentors." - Meaghen Hale

Notre Dame was right that all people, including Jews, Muslims, Hindus, pantheists, and atheists, are made in God's image. But that does not mean Catholics should join in prayer to their gods.
Atheists and Their Beliefs - First Things
We are neglecting the humanities, which offer a true understanding of the human heart, in order to develop better touchscreens and smartphone apps, so that our youth can get better horoscopes and learn new yoga poses.
The Degenderettes: The Transgender Hate Group Taking Aim at Women - Public Discourse
The San Francisco Library has allowed a group of misogynist males to take over public space in order to promote violence against women as an art form. To some radical trans activists, "TERFs" — a slur for females who critique gender ideology — deserve to be murdered for denying that someone with a man's body can really be a woman.
