Holding Hands During the Lord's Prayer - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

In one of your previous columns, you addressed the reason for gestures at Mass. I am puzzled however by a seemingly new gesture: that of holding hands during the Lord's Prayer. I feel very uncomfortable doing it. I heard it is actually a violation of Canon Law because it assumes an intimacy or communion before the "real communion," the Eucharistic celebration. Why do pastor's allow it?  Email This Article

Holy Days of Obligation - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

I am confused over Holy Days of Obligation. Last year, January 1 was not a holy day of obligation, but this year it was. A friend even argued with me that we did not have to go to Mass because the rule had been changed. What's up?  Email This Article

A Protestant friend came with me to Mass last Sunday and asked about the Holy Water fonts and why we make the sign of the cross with it when we enter and leave the Church. What answer would you give to her?  Email This Article

Holy Year Indulgences - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

Recently, our local paper had an article on the Holy Father declaring the year 2000 as a holy year and granting an indulgence for those who make a pilgrimage to Rome. The article was a little cynical toward the whole idea, especially granting indulgences for the souls in Purgatory. Could you comment?  Email This Article

Homosexuality - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

I was very disturbed over the recent letter "Always Our Children." It seems to make homosexuality accepted. Has the Church changed its teaching concerning homosexuality?  Email This Article

Homosexuality and the Church - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

The recent Vatican decision concerning Father Nugent and Sr. Jeannine Gramick stopping their work with homosexual persons has caused some publicity in the Post. I think that the Church's position was not well represented. The media makes it seem like the Church hates homosexuals. Could you please address this issue in one of your columns?  Email This Article

How Did the Stations of the Cross Begin? - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

One of the devotions in our parish every Lent is the Stations of the Cross. Could you please tell me the origins of this devotion?  Email This Article

How Many Times a Day May One Receive Communion? - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

How many times can a person receive Holy Communion each day? I attended the Chrism Mass this past Holy Thursday, and then the Mass in the evening at my parish. I received Holy Communion both times. A friend, though, said that I could only receive once a day.  Email This Article
