Automatic Excommunication for Those Who Procure Abortion - Fr. William Saunders

Many years ago, I had an abortion. After many years as a lapsed Catholic, I returned to the Church and to confession. Although the priest said something about abortion carrying with it an excommunication, he gave me absolution. I gave it no additional thought and continued to receive the sacraments. It wasnít until recently that I read something about the "rite" of removing an excommunication that I began to fear I had done and continue to do something wrong. Can you help by setting my mind at ease or instructing me in the way to proceed?  Email This Article

Bread and Wine - Fr. William Saunders

I recently saw a story on the news about a little girl in New Jersey whose first Holy Communion was invalidated by the bishop. Apparently she is allergic to wheat, and a priest gave her Communion with a host made of rice. Why canít she receive a rice host instead of a wheat host since she is allergic? What can be done?  Email This Article

Can Sinful Priests Celebrate Mass? - Fr. William Saunders

With the awful stories about the situation in Boston, I have been wondering and some of my friends have asked me whether the priest can still work as a priest. If a priest is in the state of mortal sin, can he still offer the Mass and perform the other sacraments? Do the sacraments he performs still give grace?   Email This Article

Can the Pastor Change the Creed? - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

I am very concerned about something that is happening in my parish. During the recitation of the Creed, the priest and congregation change the words. Where it says, "For us men and for our salvation..." the word "men" is being omitted. Also, at least one person in the congregation loudly proclaims that "He was born of the Virgin Mary and became one of us."  Email This Article

Capital Punishment (Part 1) - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

This past June, a jury found Timothy McVeigh guilty of the Oklahoma City bombing and he was then sentenced to death. Since then, I have read or heard many pro and con statements about capital punishment at church or in Church newspapers. Yet, the Catechism allows capital punishment. Please explain.  Email This Article
