Angels - Fr. William Saunders

With all of the talk about angels, the multitude of pictures and books about them, and even the television shows with angels, why don’t we ever hear more about them? Some of these shows make angels seem like fantasy spirits. Too many people have a superficial view of angels.  Read more...

Angels Are A 'Truth Of Faith' - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

The Catechism of the Catholic Church clearly affirms, “The existence of the spiritual non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture calls ‘angels’ is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition” (No. 328). Given that we do believe in angels, we define them as pure spirits and personal beings with intelligences and free will. They are immortal beings. As Sacred Scripture attests, they appear to humans as apparitions with a human form.  Read more...

Anointing of the Sick - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

Recently, when I was in the hospital, a lady came to give me the Anointing of the Sick. She said she was sanctioned by the "Healing Ministry" of my parish to do this. When a priest came to anoint me, I told him that I had been anointed by a lady from my parish. He said that lay people cannot anoint, so I did not receive the Sacrament. If my first anointing was not a sacrament, why does my parish have "healing ministers," and why can’t they anoint?  Read more...

Anointing of the Sick: Medicine for Sinners - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

Recently a friend was seriously ill in the hospital, and the priest "anointed" her. Didn't the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick used to be called "Extreme Unction"? Why did they change the name? Where did the sacrament come from? When should a person receive this sacrament and how many times?  Read more...

Apparitions and Dogma - Fr. William Saunders

Of course I do believe it, but do Catholics have to believe about the appearance of our Blessed Mother at Lourdes? How should I respond?  Read more...

I am a senior citizen. Lately, I have been appalled at the way people act in Church, how they dress and how they pay attention to the Mass. It certainly is not the way it was when I grew up.  Read more...

Archangels and Guardian Angels - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

Last week, we began our discussion of angels, examining their role in Sacred Scripture and even investigating the nine choirs of angels. This week, we focus our attention on the archangels and the guardian angels.  Read more...

Are Christmas Decorations Pagan? - Fr. William Saunders

A fundamentalist friend of mine commented that many of our Christmas decorations are pagan, particularly mistletoe, holly, ivy, laurel and poinsettia plants. Is there any truth to this?  Read more...

Are Oaths Necessary? - FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS

With the recent impeachment proceedings concluded, why don’t you address the issue of oaths? It seems like last week’s gospel (Feb. 14) dealt with the topic making them unnecessary.  Read more...

Arguing Against the Pro-Choice Position - Fr. William Saunders

Sometimes I have met Catholics - especially where I work - who say, "I am personally against abortion, but I am pro-choice." To me, that makes no sense, but how can I argue with them?  Read more...
