The conflict between the Church and Galileo was not between a progressive scientist and a backward clergy, or between a blameless individual and an authoritarian Church. This paper is an attempt to examine the pertinent ideas, issues, and personalities in the Galileo affair and by trying to understand these, shed some light on what was at the very heart of the dispute between Galileo and the Catholic Church.
