Born into a devout and powerful Presbyterian family in 1918, he converted to the Catholic faith at Harvard and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1956. Pope John Paul II plans to make him a cardinal Feb. 21, the first ever American theologian to be so honored. He spoke recently with Register staff writer Brian McGuire.
